Privacy Policy
1. Overview
SpeedWatch is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. Everything the app records about your network stays on your device and is fully under your control.
2. Data We Collect
None. SpeedWatch does not collect or send any personal information to any server operated by us or third parties (except as described in Sections 4 and 5 below).
All speed test results, network details, and audit history are stored locally on your device using Android's Room database. This data is never transmitted off your device by SpeedWatch.
3. Data Stored Locally On Your Device
SpeedWatch stores the following information exclusively on your device:
- Speed test results (download, upload, ping, jitter, timestamp)
- Your ISP name and plan speed (entered during onboarding)
- Lab audit results (throttling, bufferbloat, DNS)
- App preferences and settings
- Background monitoring logs
You can delete all stored data at any time by clearing the app's data in Android Settings, or by uninstalling SpeedWatch.
4. Network Connections Made by the App
To perform speed tests and diagnostics, SpeedWatch makes the following network connections:
- Speed testing: Downloads and uploads test payloads to public speed test endpoints to measure your connection speed. These connections contain no personal identifiers.
- Bufferbloat test: Simulates concurrent TCP connections to measure latency under load.
- DNS audit: Sends UDP DNS queries to
1.1.1.1(Cloudflare) and8.8.8.8(Google) to measure resolver response times. These are standard DNS queries with no personal data. - Throttling check: Reads hardware link speed from the Android Wi-Fi subsystem — no network connection required.
5. Third-Party SDKs
SpeedWatch integrates the following third-party services for the free tier:
- Google AdMob – Displays banner advertisements in the free version. AdMob may collect device identifiers and advertising IDs as governed by Google's Privacy Policy. Upgrade to SpeedWatch Pro to remove all ads.
- Firebase Crashlytics – Collects anonymous crash reports to help us fix bugs. Reports contain stack traces, device model, Android version, and app version. No personally identifiable information is included. Governed by Firebase's Privacy Policy.
- Firebase Analytics – Collects anonymous, aggregated usage statistics (e.g. which screens are visited). No personal data is linked to these events.
- Google Play Billing – Used for the Pro in-app purchase. All payment processing is handled entirely by Google Play. We never see or store your payment information.
6. Permissions We Request
- INTERNET – Required to perform speed tests.
- ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION – Required on Android to read Wi-Fi band information (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) and SSID. We do not record or transmit your location.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS – Required on Android 13+ to send you speed drop notifications (only if you enable background monitoring).
- READ_PHONE_STATE – Used to detect network type (Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G) for accurate diagnostics. We do not read your phone number or call history.
7. Children's Privacy
SpeedWatch is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will take appropriate action.
8. Data Security
Since all data is stored only on your device, its security depends on your device's security settings (PIN, biometrics, encryption). We have no access to your data and cannot retrieve it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of SpeedWatch after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.
